Mercy College Softball Drops Two

          DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College softball team was defeated by the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, April 14, by scores of 11-0 and 9-0.   The Flyers are 0-10 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Purple Knights improved to 8-24 overall and 2-10 in the conference. 

            Sophomore leftfielder Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) connected for two hits in the first game, going 2-for-3.  Freshman pitcher Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) had five strikeouts in the contest.  In the second game junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) recorded six strikeouts for the Flyers.

            In game one of the doubleheader, New Haven recorded one run in the third inning and three each in the following two innings.  In the third inning freshman catcher Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) recorded a double for the Flyers.  The Chargers were able to add four runs in the top of the sixth, making the final score 11-0.  New Haven's pitcher, Samantha Mantor gave up three hits, with five strikeouts.

            In the second game, the Purple Knights were able to score one run in the first inning to lead off the contest. Bridgeport also put two runs on the board in the third and fifth innings, respectively.  In the top of the seventh inning the Purple Knights scored four more runs, to finish the game on top 9-0.  Mercy was held hitless in the first 6 and 2/3 innings until Madick had a base hit to break up Tricia Lee's no-hitter.  Pereyo followed with a double, and Madick was thrown out at home plate to conclude the contests.  Lee recorded 11 strikeouts for the Purple Knights.

            The Flyers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 17, when they travel to ECC opponent C.W. Post.  The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
