WEST HAVEN, CT - The Mercy College softball team was defeated by host New Haven on Tuesday, April 3, by scores of 8-0 and 7-0. The Flyers are 0-6 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Chargers improved to 16-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Senior shortstop Brigette Burke (Queens, NY) connected for two hits in the second game, going 2-for-3. Senior outfielder Eileen Sacharewitz (Bedford, NY) recorded Mercy's other hit in the contest, going 1-for-1. Junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) recorded five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work in the first contest, while freshman Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) had two in the second game for the Flyers.
In game one of the doubleheader, New Haven recorded two runs in the first inning and five in the following inning. The Chargers were able to add one more run in the bottom of the fifth, making the final score 8-0. New Haven's pitcher, Breanne Gleason tossed a no-hitter, with nine strikeouts.
In the second game, Mercy threatened in the second inning when Sacharewitz and Burke hit back-to-back singles. However both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when New Haven plated a run. The Chargers were able to score four and two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
The Flyers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, when they travel to Bloomfield. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
