Mercy College Softball Falls at Queens, 7-2 and 4-2

FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College softball team fell in an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader at Queens College on Monday, March 26. The Flyers are now 0-4 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Lady Knights improved to 7-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Mercy dropped the first game by a score of 7-2, before coming up short in the second contest, 4-2.
Senior outfielder Eileen Sacharewitz (Bedford, NY) went 3-for-6 on the afternoon, while freshman second baseman Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) was 3-for-7 with a run driven in. Junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) recorded five strikeouts in six innings of work in the first contest, while freshman Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) had two in the second game for the Flyers.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Queens recorded a run in the second inning before plating three in the third frame, and two more in the fourth, making the score 6-0.
Mercy recorded two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Flyers led off the inning with singles by Madick and junior outfielder Jamie DeJesus (Sleepy Hollow, NY). Mercy received three more key base hits in the inning by Sacharewitz, Pereyo, and LaBella, scoring two runs to make the score 6-2. Pereyo and LaBella recorded the runs batted in for the Flyers. Queens scored one more run in the sixth inning, to make the final score 7-2.
In game two, the Lady Knights scored one run in the first and fourth innings and plated two in the second, taking a 4-0 lead. In the top of the seventh inning Mercy was able to get on the board, scoring twice to cut the score in half at 4-2. Sophomore outfielder Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) led the Flyers when she reached base on an error. Sacharewitz then doubled and both players scored on an error. Sacharewitz went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the contest.
The Flyers will be back in action on Tuesday, April 3, when they travel to New Haven. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
