          ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Mercy College softball team was defeated by host Molloy in its season and conference opener, 17-0 and 6-5, on Monday, March 26.   The Flyers are 0-2 overall and in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Lady Lions improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference. 

          In the first contest, Molloy scored three runs in the first and fourth innings, adding five and six runs in the second and third, respectively.  Katie Scotko went the distance for the Lady Lions, allowing only one hit and one walk, both to junior pitcher Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA).  Both pitchers fanned five batters.

            In the top of the second inning of the second game Molloy built at 4-0 lead, until Mercy was able to plate one run in the bottom of the inning, to make the score 4-1.  Madick started the inning with a single before Eileen Sacharewitz (Bedford, NY) singled and with an error by the right fielder, freshman pinch runner Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT) scored.  In the sixth inning the Lady Lions were able to plate two more runs to make the score 6-1. 

            In the seventh inning, Madick led off with another single before junior Jamie DeJesus (Sleepy Hollow, NY) doubled to right field.  Sophomore Jessica Fabian (Whitehall, PA) reached on an error, allowing Madick to score.  Freshman Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) doubled to collect two runs batted in, making the score 6-4.  Mercy was able to score one more run, making the final tally 6-5, Lady Lions.

            Pereyo pitched seven innings for the Flyers, collecting seven strike outs and allowing one walk and two earned runs.  Her counterpart Dawn Duggan fanned seven, walked one, and allowed two earned runs for the Lady Lions.  Madick led Mercy going 2-for-3 and scoring a run.  DeJesus was 1-for-2 and scored a run, while Pereyo recorded one hit and two runs batted in for Mercy.

            The Flyers will be back in action on Wednesday, March 28, when they travel to Queens.  The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
