Mercy College Men's Tennis Has Success at Scott Satran Memorial; Tops Several D-I Opponents
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy
College men's tennis team competed at the Scott Satran Memorial
Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Mavericks competed against
several Division I opponents from schools, such as Holy Cross, St.
Peter's, Monmouth, and Hofstra.
In No. 1 singles, senior Zeki Tukel (Istanbul,
Turkey) was defeated by Hofstra's Tytus Stempniewicz 4-6,
6-1, 11-9. Sophomore Mehdi Rhazali (Rabat,
Morocco) had a strong tournament by beating Monmouth's
Corey Forrest 5-7, 6-4, 10-4. He then beat Queens' Dave Burnstein
6-4, 6-1 in the semi-finals. Concordia's Filippo Figliomeni
defeated Rhazali 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.
In No. 3 singles, senior Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St.
Georges) took out St. Peter's J.J. Gramatica in straight
sets 6-1, 6-4. Prosper dropped his semi-final match against
Concordia's Andrey Boldarev 6-1, 6-4. Senior Yusufcan
Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) was defeated in the fourth flight
by Monmouth's David Sherwood 7-5, retired. Junior Christian
Cheuque (Vina del Mar, Chile) came from behind in the
fifth flight to defeat Holy Cross's Jay DeSanto 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Monmouth's Tim McLane took the semi-final match against Cheuque
6-0, 6-1.
In the first flight of doubles play, Prosper and Tukel were
defeated by Hoftra's top pair Stempniewicz and Stian Tvedt 8-3. In
No. 2 doubles, Rhazali and Koksal won a close match against St.
Peter's Gramatica and Peter Czajka 9-8. Mercy's duo then defeated
Holy Cross's DeSanto and Angelo Sila 8-6. Concordia's Richard
Malobicky and Henning Ruenz dropped the Mavericks 8-2 in the
finals.
