Seren and Tukel Advance to Quarterfinal Round of ITA East Regionals for Mercy College Men's Tennis
BLOOMSBURG, PA - Mercy College men's tennis seniors Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) both won their first two singles matches at the ITA East Region Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University, to advance to the "A-Flight" quarterfinals on Sunday. The duo also teamed up for a pair of victories in doubles play, advancing to the semifinals.
Tukel opened up singles action by blanking Michael Dolan of Bentley, 6-0, 6-0, and followed with a 6-1, 5-7 (10-7) triumph over Ryan Chow of Bloomsburg. Seren began with a 6-1, 6-2 win versus Ricardo Martins of The University of Sciences in Philadelphia in the first round, and then defeated Henning Ruenz from East Coast Conference rival Concordia, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won his first round match, defeating Kaltenzacher from Philadelphia University, 6-0, 6-3. In second round action, Ferreira played well and battled Concordia's Rodrigo Teixeira, one of the region's top players, before falling 7-5, 6-3. Junior Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) also competed in singles action, falling 6-1, 6-2, to Lukas Labitsch of Kutztown. Both Ferreira and Prosper will play in the consolation draw.
In doubles action, Seren and Tukel posted an 8-3 first round win over Kaltenzacher and McAvoy from Philadelphia University, before topping Kirill Azovtsev and Nik Boerger from Concordia, 8-3. Prosper and Ferreira dropped an 8-3 decision to Bloomsburg's Dan Gal and Ryan Chow in the first round.
The ITA East Region Championships will continue on Sunday, with the singles champion to be crowned on Monday.
