Men's Tennis Edged by Queens, 5-4

FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 45 in the nation, was held off by host Queens College, 5-4 on Saturday. The Mavericks are now 3-5 overall and 3-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.  The Knights improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Queens took two of the three doubles matches.  Mercy's point came at the top spot with Carl Johnson (St. John, Antigua) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) knocking off Marcel Kim and Taylor Crabill, 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, David Burnstein and Fabio Minami notched a point with a tight 8-6 decision over Mercy's Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and Mehdi Rhazali (Rabat, Morocco). Queens got its other point at No. 3 as Robby Scheuing and Ariel Nassim topped Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) and Christian Cheque (Vina del Mar, Chile), 8-4.

In singles play, Tukel gave the Mavericks another point at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kim. Prosper posted a 7-6 (4), 6-3 decision over Crabill at No. 4 for Mercy and Koksal recorded a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) triumph versus Scheuing at No. 5. Queens got a win at No. 2 with Minami over Rhazali 6-2, 7-5, another point at No. 3 as Burstein topped Johnson 6-3, 6-2, and a third point at No. 6 with Nassim over Cheque 6-2, 6-0.

The Mavericks will look to bounce back on Sunday, April 13, with a non-conference match at Millersville, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
