Mercy College Men's Tennis Defeated by No. 12 Concordia, 9-0
BRONXVILLE, NY - Mercy College, ranked No. 45 in the nation, dropped a 9-0 decision at the hands of host Concordia on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in East Coast Conference (ECC) action. The Clippers, ranked No. 12, improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Concordia took all three doubles matches with Niklas Boerger and Alex Grubin topping Carl Johnson (St. John, Antigua) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) 8-1 at the top spot. The Mercy duo of Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and Mehdi Rhazali (Rabat, Morocco) gave Rodrigo Teixeira and Kirill Azovtsev a run at No. 2, but fell short by a score of 8-6. Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) and Christian Cheque (Vina del Mar, Chile) fell to Josep Molet and Henning Ruenz at No. 3, 8-0.
In singles play, Mercy's Carl Johnson battled Niklas Boerger at No. 3, dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) decision. In other singles action, Tukel was defeated by Grubin, the No. 1 ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, 6-0, 6-3 at the top slot. Mehdi Rhazali fell 6-0, 6-1 to Teixeira at No. 2, and Prosper dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match at No. 4 to Ruenz. Koksal fell at No. 5 to Azovtsev, 6-4, 6-0, and Cheque was defeated by Vladimir Malkin 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Mavericks will compete again on Saturday, April 5, when they travel to Adelphi for another ECC tilt beginning at 1:00 p.m.
