29th-Ranked Mercy Men's Tennis Held Off by No. 9 Rollins, 6-3
WINTER PARK, FL - Mercy College, the 29th-ranked men's tennis team in the nation, fell by a score of 6-3 at the hands of No. 9 Rollins on Tuesday. The Mavericks are now 1-2 on the year, while the Tars improved to 12-3.
Rollins took all three doubles matches. Mercy's Carl Johnson and Zeki Tukel gave the 13th-ranked duo of Jonathan Gomez and Brian Compton all they could handle at No. 1 before falling 8-5. Timon Prosper and Yusufcan Koksal also dropped a tight match to Gustavo Carvalho and Pablo Seijo, 8-5 at No. 2. Mehdi Rhazali and Christian Cheque were defeated at No. 3 by Bill Rockwood and Oi-hao Tan, 8-1.
In singles play, Tukel fell to Compton, ranked No. 45 in the country, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, but Rhazali topped Gomez, ranked No. 48, with a 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 decision at No. 2. Prosper was defeated by Tan, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, but Mercy got two more points with Johnson's 6-0, 1-0 (ret.) victory over Carvalho at No. 4, and Koksal's triumph versus Austin Duvall at No. 5, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5. Cheque fell 6-0, 6-0 to Seijo at No. 6.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, March 26, when they take on defending NCAA Division II national champion Lynn University, currently ranked No. 3 in the country.
