No. 29 Mavericks Fall at No. 14 Florida Southern, 9-0
LAKELAND, FL - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 29 in the nation, dropped a 9-0 decision at No. 14 Florida Southern on Monday. The Mavericks are now 1-1 on the year, while the Moccasins improved to 9-3.
Florida Southern took all three doubles matches in the first set. At No. 1, Carl Johnson and Zeki Tukel fell 8-2 against Michael Knoedler and Roman Schrimaier. Timon Prosper and Yusufcan Koksal battled Alex Thesleff and Guenther Fercher at No. 2 before falling 8-5. Mehdi Razali and Christian Cheque dropped an 8-2 decision to Greg Heartt and Justin Laflamme at No. 3.
In singles action, Tukel fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 to Knoedler, the 11th-ranked player in the country, and Rhazali was topped by Schrimaier 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Prosper was edged in a three-set battle to Fercher at No. 3, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-7, and Johnson was defeated 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 by Laflamme. At No. 5, Koksal fell 6-1, 6-4 to J.J. Bolock, and Cheque dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to C.J. Johnson.
The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, March 25, at No. 9 Rollins.
