No. 29 Mercy College Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas in ECC Men's Tennis

SPARKILL, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 29 in the nation, began its 2008 East Coast Conference (ECC) slate with a 9-0 shutout of host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday.

The Mavericks (1-0, 1-0 ECC) lost only nine games in six matches to put it away. In doubles play, Yusufcan Koksal and Mehdi Rhazali posted an 8-2 win at No. 1, Carl Johnson and Timon Prosper paired for an 8-0 victory at No. 2, and Zeki Tukel and Christian Cheque registered an 8-1 decision at No. 3.

Tukel cruised to an 8-0 shutout of Tony Tello at the top singles spot and Rhazali knocked off Jeff Boyce at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2. Prosper posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Ryan Maher at No. 3, followed by Johnson's 6-0, 6-0 win versus Jon Iliev at No. 3.  Koksal added a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Michael Antolini at No. 5, and Cheque defeated Ed Reiter 8-2 at No. 6.

The Mavericks will now head to Florida for a three-match road trip versus some of the top programs in the country.  The southern swing will begin with a match at No. 14 Florida Southern (Mar. 24), followed by a contest at No. 9 Rollins (Mar. 25), and conclude at defending NCAA Division II national champion Lynn (Mar. 26), currently No. 3 in the nation.
