Mercy College Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play at ECC Flight Championships
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, who are ranked No. 28 in the nation, wrapped up play at the East Coast Conference (ECC) Flight Championships on Sunday, which was hosted by Queens College. The Mavericks competed with only four athletes and were able to advance to three singles and two doubles finals.
The day began with doubles finals where Timon Prosper (Mardi Gras, St. George's) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) squared off against Concordia's top seeded duo of Rodrigo Teixiara and Alex Grubin. Prosper and Tukel were defeated 8-0.
The next doubles match was between Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and Mehdi Rhazali (Morocco) who were defeated by Concordia's Nick Boerger and Kiril Azovtsev by a score of 8-5.
The Mavericks were able to rediscover its winning ways in singles semi-finals. In the number two match, Tukel ousted Dowling College's Petr Grischenko in straight sets, 6-3. 6-4. Prosper defeated Dowling College's Saulo Gonzales in the number three match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. In the fourth ranked match, Koksal had his way with Queens College's David Alper, 6-0, 6-1. The only loss in the semi-finals was in the top ranked match where Rhazali was defeated by Dowling College's Jose Gomez.
Tukel, Prosper and Koksal all lost in the finals to Concordia athletes in straight sets.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, March 22 against St. Thomas Aquinas.
