Mercy College Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season at ECC Flight Championships
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 28 in the nation, opened the 2008 spring campaign at the East Coast Conference (ECC) Flight Championships, hosted by Queens College on Saturday.
The duo of Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) and Timon Prosper (Mardi Gras, St. George's) advanced to the finals at first doubles after posting a pair of wins. They first knocked off Tomas Walczak and Alex Molotzky of Adelphi in the first round, 8-6. Tukel and Prosper then defeated the second seeded pair of Petr Greschenko and Jose Gomez from Dowling, 8-3. With the match tied 3-3, Mercy broke serve and closed it out from there. Tukel and Prosper will face top seeded Concordia on Sunday in the title match.
In second doubles and Mehdi Rhazali's (Morocco) first collegiate match, he and Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) downed the Queens pair of Fabio Minami and David Burstein, 8-2. They will move on to battle Concordia's second doubles duo in the semifinals on Sunday.
Rhazali also captured a win at number one singles, defeating his opponent from St. Thomas Aquinas College, 6-0, 6-0. He will take on Dowling's Jose Gomez on semifinals. Tukel, Prosper, and Koksal received byes in the first round and will all play in the semifinals.
Action will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 24.
