Mercy Men's Tennis Captures Four Titles
at Scott Satran Tournament
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team opened its 2006-07 campaign by bringing home four singles titles at the Scott Satran Tournament on Sunday, September 24.
In the No. 1 flight, sophomore Vyacheslav Glebov knocked off nationally ranked Rodrigo Teixeira of Concordia in three sets during opening round play on Saturday. On Sunday, he started the day by defeating another nationally ranked player, Gustavo Sanchez, in a three-set semifinal match. Glebov then met his third straight nationally ranked opponent, Wojciech Stuchlik of Queens, in the finals where he dropped the first set, but rallied to win the next two and take the championship.
Alican Seren followed at No. 2, where he won his opening round match in two sets over Division I opponent Monmouth on Saturday. He followed up with a 6-1, 6-3, victory in the semifinals and then knocked off Andrey Vasiliev of Queens in the final, 6-2, 6-3, to give Mercy another title.
At No. 4 singles, Carl Johnson defeated his opening round opponent from Boston University in three sets. He then topped Dowling's Petr Grishchenko, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals and rallied past Monmouth's No. 4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, for the title.
Not to be outdone at No. 5, Timon Prosper won a two-set decision in opening round play on Saturday against Monmouth, and followed with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Jimmy Delevante of Queens in the semifinals. Prosper closed out Mercy's fourth crown with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, triumph versus Monmouth's No. 5.
Mercy nearly had a fifth title as their No. 2 doubles pair of Glebov and Johnson also advanced to the championship round, but fell just short to Boston University, 8-6.
"Our team really put together a great tournament heading in to next weekend's regionals," said head coach Barbaros Ozdogan. "Winning four out of five singles championships is a great honor."
Mercy will return to action on September 30 and October 1, at the ITA Regionals hosted by Bloomsburg.
