No. 36 Mercy College Men's Tennis Falls to No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State, 5-1 in NCAA Tournament Round of 16
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 36 in the nation, fell by a score of 5-1, to No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State University in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 9. The Flyers complete the year with an 11-4 overall record, advancing to the round of 16 for the first time in program history, while the Pirates improved to 25-3.
Armstrong Atlantic State took two out of three doubles matches, winning at No. 1 and No. 2. Mercy's pair of Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) gave the Flyers their first point at No. 3 doubles, winning by a score of 8-6 over Christian Easton and Paul Bishop.
The Pirates put the match away in singles play with victories at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6. Seren had taken the first set of his match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, and was down 1-2 in the second set, but the decisive point was notched, ending the contest.
Mercy closed out the year having spent the entire spring ranked among the FILA/ITA National Top 40, and as high as No. 2 in the East Region. Next year, head coach Barbaros Ozdogan will return all six letterwinners from this year's squad.
