No. 36 Mercy College Men's Tennis Advances to NCAA Tournament Round of 16 with 5-3 Victory Over No. 31 Kutztown
KUTZTOWN, PA - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 36 in the nation, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 by knocking off host and No. 31-ranked Kutztown on Friday, May 4, in the second round. The Flyers improved to 11-3 on the year, while the Golden Bears end their season at 11-3 overall.
Mercy swept the doubles segment, winning three hard fought matches. The duos of Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) at No. 2, and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) and Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) at No. 3, both won 8-4 decisions. Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) paired up to win a 9-7 battle at No. 1.
The Golden Bears captured three points in singles play, winning at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5. Seren gave Mercy its fourth point at No. 3 singles, defeating Lukas Beman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Prosper then gave the Flyers the clincher by capturing a three-set decision at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, over Rubens Vianna.
Mercy will now take on Armstrong Atlantic State, ranked No. 3 in the nation, on Wednesday, May 9, in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Pirates (26-3) advanced with a pair of 5-0 wins over Shaw and No. 25 Augusta State. The Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College will serve as hosts. Matches will be played at Sanlando Park.
