No. 37 Mercy College Falls 5-0 to No. 16 Concordia in ECC Men's Tennis Finals
BRONXVILLE, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team (9-3), ranked No. 37 in the nation and seeded second, fell by a score of 5-0 in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championship match to host Concordia, the top seed and 16th-ranked team in the nation, on Saturday, April 21.
Concordia took all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) fell to Rodrigo Teixeira and Vita Galatioto at No. 1, by a score of 8-5. Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) and Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) battled at No. 2, but dropped an 8-6 decision to Kirill Azovtsev and Alex Grubin. Concordia's John Cassas and Niklas Boerger posted an 8-3 decision over Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) at No. 3.
Concordia then closed the match out with the final two points in singles play. Grubin recorded a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Koksal at No. 1, and Teixeira defeated Seren by scores of 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Concordia claims the ECC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Mercy, currently ranked No. 3 in the East Region, will now wait for the announcement of at-large bids, which will be announced on Wednesday, April 25.
