No. 37 Mercy College Downs Dowling in ECC Men's Tennis Tournament Semifinals
Flyers to Face No. 16 Concordia for League Title on Saturday
VALHALLA, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 37 in the nation and seeded second in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships, defeated third seeded Dowling by a score of 5-3, in the semifinals on Friday, April 20. With their fifth straight win, the Flyers (9-2) advance to the championship match on Saturday at top seeded Concordia, ranked No. 16 in the nation.
After Mercy's Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) defeated JinChul Choi and Pedro Munoz (Buneca, Equador) by a score of 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, Dowling's Gustavo Sanchez (Valencia, Venezuela) and Jose Gomez (Asuncion, Paraguay) defeated Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) 8-4 at No. 1. Petr Grishchenko (Moscow, Russia) and Salulo Gonzalez (Lima, Peru) then paired up for a 9-8 (6-0) victory at No. 2 over Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) and Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) to give Dowling (9-5) a 2-1 lead.
Mercy needed four wins in singles play and got the first at No. 5, as Ferreira posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Munoz. Prosper followed with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph for Mercy versus Choi at No. 6, and Seren downed Grishchenko 6-0, 4-0 (retired) at No. 3, giving Mercy a 4-2 lead. Sanchez made the match 4-3 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Koksal at No. 1, but Tukel battled for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 win against Gomez at No. 2 to give Mercy the clincher.
The Flyers and Clippers will meet for the league crown at 10:00 am on Saturday in a match to be played at Concordia's Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY.
