No. 37 Mercy College Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight, 8-1 Over Queens; Flyers Clinch Second Seed at ECC Championships
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 37 in the nation, notched its third straight victory with an 8-1 decision over host Queens College on Friday, April 13. The Flyers are now 7-2 overall, and 3-1 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play as they clinched the number two seed for next week's league tournament.
Mercy captured all three points in doubles play. Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) took an 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. George's) and Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) won by a score of 8-6 at No. 2. The Flyers took the point at No. 3 by default.
Mercy earned five out of six points in singles play. Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) won at No. 2 by scores of 6-4, 6-1, and Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 3. Glebov battled to win a hard fought three set match at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 15-13. Ferreira cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 5, and the Flyers earned the point at No. 6 by default.
The win over Queens is Mercy's first under head coach Barbaros Ozdogan, now in his sixth year. "We are very happy about today's performance and I'm extremely proud of my players," said Ozdogan.
As the second seed in the ECC Tournament, Mercy will play host to Dowling on Thursday, April 19. Prior to that, the Flyers will return to action on Saturday, April 14, in another ECC match at St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at Noon, and close out the regular season at Kutztown, ranked No. 31 in the nation, on Sunday, April 15.
