No. 40 Mercy College Men's Tennis Blanks Adelphi, 9-0
WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 40 in the nation, posted a 9-0 shutout of host Adelphi in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Wednesday, April 4. The Flyers improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 against ECC opponents.
Mercy started off by sweeping all three doubles matches. Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) teamed up for a 9-8 triumph at No. 1, while Timon Prosper (Mardigras, St. Georges) and Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) won 8-6 at No. 2, and Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) paired with Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) for an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
In singles play, Koksal put up a super tie break win over Tomasz Walczak at No. 1. After winning the first set 6-3, he was edged in the second set, 5-7, but came back for a 10-4 winner. Seren gave Mercy its fifth and decisive point at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2. The final four points were secured in pro set victories by Glebov, currently ranked 33rd nationally, at No. 2 (9-7), Tukel at No. 3 (8-4), Ferreira at No. 5 (8-1), and Prosper at No. 6 (8-0).
Mercy returns to action on Friday, April 6, at Kutztown, currently ranked No. 30 in the nation. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
