Mercy's Alican Seren and Carlos Ferreira Earn ECC Weekly Honors
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College men's tennis junior Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) has been selected as the East Coast Conference (ECC) Player of the Week, and freshman Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) was named ECC Rookie of the Week. The league office announced its weekly awards on Tuesday.
Seren was near perfect at the North South duals, going 4-0 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles at the No. 2 and 3 flights, to help Mercy to the team title and four wins in five matches, including a win over No. 38 Limestone. In Mercy's spring season-opening 5-4 win over Mount Olive on Friday, he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 3 singles, and followed with another straight set 6-0, 6-2, victory versus Methodist later in the day. Against Limestone, Seren rolled to another 6-0, 6-1 triumph, this time at No. 2 singles, and then closed out the event with another victory at No. 3 versus 31st-ranked Barton. He paired up with Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) for wins at No. 3 doubles versus Mount Olive, Methodist, and Barton, along with a victory at No. 2 doubles versus Chowan. He is now 7-1 in singles play this year, and 3-1 in doubles action.
Ferreira posted a pair of victories in singles and doubles action at the North South duals. At No. 4 singles, he recorded wins versus Methodist and Chowan, and teamed with Timon Prosper (Grenada) for victories versus Mount Olive (at No. 2) and Chowan (at No. 3).
Mercy is currently ranked No. 40 in the nation and No. 2 in the East region, according to the latest FILA/ITA poll. The Flyers will return to action on Saturday, March 31, in a big ECC tilt at Concordia, currently ranked No. 18 in the nation. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m.
