No. 40 Mercy College Men's Tennis Downs Methodist 6-1 and Mount Olive 5-4 to Open North South Duals

          WILSON, NC - The Mercy College men's tennis team, No. 40 in the latest FILA/ITA National rankings, opened its 2007 dual match campaign with a 6-1 win over Methodist and a 5-4 triumph over Mount Olive on day one of the North South Duals, hosted by Barton College.

          In the opener, freshman Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey), sophomore Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey), junior Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey), and freshman Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) all won their singles matches. The pairings of Seren and Tukel, along with Ferreira and sophomore Timon Prosper (Grenada), won in doubles, 8-6, and 8-3, respectively.

          Mercy jumped out to a 2-1 lead versus Mount Olive, getting wins in doubles action from the duos of Ferreira and Prosper, 9-8 (7-3), and Tukel and Seren, 8-2.  Tukel gave the Flyers their first point in singles play, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Seren then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory, and Prosper's 6-4, 6-3, triumph gave Mercy the edge.

          The Flyers will return to action on Saturday, March 24, versus Limestone and Chowan, on day two of the North South Duals.
