Mercy Men's Tennis Competes on Day One
at the ECC Singles and Doubles Tournament
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team opened its 2007 spring campaign at the ECC Singles and Doubles Tournament on Saturday, February 24. The Flyers' No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 seeds advanced to Sunday's finals.
In the No. 1 flight, Alican Seren (Istanbul, Turkey) knocked off K. Azovtsev of Concordia in three sets in the opening round of play. He lost the first set but came back and won the next two. About an hour later Seren was playing Wojciech Stuchlik of Queens, where he fell in two sets. Junior Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) followed at No. 2, where he won his opening round match in three sets over J. Gomez of Dowling. He was then defeated in two sets by Concordia's Rodrigo Teixeira.
After a first round bye, in the No. 3 spot, sophomore Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) defeated S. Gonzales of Dowling in straight sets. Freshman Carlos Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played the last match of the day, in the No. 4 spot. He defeated Efstathiou of Queens in three tough sets.
Sophomore Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) defeated Delevante of Queens. Timon Prosper (Grenada) was in the No. 6 flight for Mercy. He had a first round bye and then beat Dowling's Levy in two straight sets.
All three of Mercy's doubles pairs will be playing in tomorrow's quarterfinals. On Sunday Mercy will have four singles and doubles matches.
