Mercy College Men's Tennis Picked Third in Tight ECC Preseason Poll
Vyacheslav Glebov Named to Preseason All-Conference Team
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team has been tabbed for third place in the 2007 East Coast Conference (ECC) Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's head coaches. The Flyers received 29 points, only two behind preseason favorite Concordia and one behind second place Queens. Mercy, Concordia and Queens shared the 2006 regular season men's tennis crown. All three teams each received two first place votes from the league's six head men's tennis coaches. Mercy sophomore Vyacheslav Glebov (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), last year's conference Rookie of the Year, was named to the 2007 Preseason All-ECC team.
Mercy was ranked No. 4 in the Fall ITA Eastern Regional poll. The Flyers enjoyed a successful fall season, capturing four singles titles at the Scott Satran Tournament in September, and putting together a strong performance at the ITA Regionals.
Last year, Mercy earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Flyers battled Assumption in East Regional First Round action before getting edged 5-4. Head coach Barbaros Ozdogan returns three letterwinners from that squad and has brought in another talented group of newcomers to make a run at a return trip.
Glebov is currently ranked No. 30 in the nation and No. 3 in the region. He won the No. 1 flight singles title at the Scott Satran Tournament, knocking off three straight nationally ranked players. He followed up by advancing to the semifinals of the "A" flight at the ITA Regionals.
Mercy will open up the 2007 season at the ECC Flight Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25 at Queens College. This year's ECC Men's Tennis Team Championship Tournament, which is a four-team affair, will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 19-20, with the higher seed teams hosting matches on both days.
