Assumption Edges Mercy, 5-4, in NCAA East
Regional First Round
EASTON, MA - Assumption senior Michael Goldman (Worcester, MA) posted a three-set victory at No. 1 singles over Mercy senior Hans Peter Gartner (Vienna, Austria) to lift the fifth-seeded Greyhounds to a 5-4 victory over the fourth-seeded Flyers in a first round match of the 2006 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Regional at Stonehill.
With the match knotted at 4-4, Goldman took the first set, 7-6 (8-6), but Gartner bounced back with a 7-5 win in the second set. Goldman then rallied for a 6-4 triumph in set three to seal it for the Greyhounds.
Assumption took a 2-1 lead after winning by identical scores of 8-3, at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Mercy point came at No. 1, where Gartner and freshman Yusufcan Koksal (Ankara, Turkey) defeated Goldman and Jared Dorfman, 8-3.
Mercy got its first singles point from senior Pavol Vasko (Slovakia) as he defeated Rich Lieberman (East Haddam, CT), 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6. Koksal then downed Dorfman at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-5, and freshman Timon Prosper (Grenada) knocked off Dave Marshall (Newington, CT) at No. 5, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
Mercy finishes the year at 10-4 overall, while Assumption improves to 17-3, and advances to take on top-seeded Concordia in second round action on Friday, May 5.
