Flyers to take on Assumption in First Round of
East Regional
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team has earned an at-large bid to the 2006 NCAA Division II Championships and will face Assumption in first round play of the East Regional. The NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Committee announced the field of 64 on Wednesday, April 26. Mercy will be making its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Flyers' first round match versus Assumption will be held at Concordia in Bronxville, NY. Time of the match is to be announced. If they advance, the Flyers will face the winner of Concordia versus Stonehill in the second round.
Mercy, the No. 4 seed in its region, is currently 10-3 overall and posted a 5-1 mark in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play to earn a share of the regular season title with Concordia and Queens. The Flyers are currently ranked No. 5 in the Fila Northeast regional rankings.
Assumption, the No. 5 seed, won the Northeast-10 Tournament title for an eighth straight year. The Greyhounds are currently 16-3 overall and went undefeated in league play at 11-0.
These two teams met in last year's NCAA Tournament first round with Assumption coming out on top 5-0. Mercy also appeared in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, dropping a 5-2 decision to Dowling in the first round.
The winner of each first- and second-round tournament will advance to the finals in Kansas City, Missouri, with the Kansas City Sports Commission and Rockhurst University serving as co-hosts, May 10-13. The championships consist of a 16-team single elimination tournament.
