Queens Stops Mercy Tennis, 7-2, Flyers Share NYCAC Regular Season Title
FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team fell by a score of 7-2, at Queens College on Tuesday afternoon. Mercy's record dropped to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play. Queens improved to 18-2 overall and 5-1 in the league.
The final score of the match results in a three-way tie for the NYCAC regular season championship between Mercy, Queens and Concordia. Queens will be the No. 1 seed at this week's NYCAC Team Championships by virtue of tie-breakers, while Concordia will be the No. 2 seed, Mercy receives the No. 3 seed and Dowling rounds it out as the No. 4 seed.
Queens took all three doubles matches, with Carl Johnson and Vyacheslav Glebov making a run at No. 2, for Mercy before falling by a score of 8-5, to Ricardo Yepes and Andrey Vasiliev.
Hans Peter Gartner fell at No. 1 singles to Wojciech Stuchlik, the No. 37 singles player in the nation, but gave him a tough match in two sets, 7-5, and 6-4. Mercy got a point at No. 3 singles from Johnson as he defeated Yepes in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, and 6-1. Yusufcan Koksal notched the other point for the Flyers at No. 4, downing Billy Almeyda in fierce three set battle, 3-6, 7-6 (5), and 10-5.
As the No. 3 seed, the Flyers will face No. 2 Concordia in the semifinals on Thursday, April 20. That match will be held at Concordia, with the winner moving on to the championship match on Friday, April 21, versus either No. 1 seed Queens or No. 4 seed Dowling. Mercy defeated Concordia by a score of 5-4, on Friday, April 14.
