Mercy Men's Tennis Upends Nationally Ranked Concordia, 5-4
BRONXVILLE, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team pulled off its biggest win of the year, upending host Concordia, the No. 35 team in NCAA Division II, by a score of 5-4, on Friday, April 14. In the process, the Flyers stretched their win streak to five straight, while improving to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play. Concordia dropped to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in league action. Heading into today's match, Mercy was ranked No. 5 in the latest Fila Northeast regional rankings and Concordia was ranked No. 1.
In doubles play, Mercy took the top two matches by identical scores of 8-4. Hans Peter Gartner and Yusufcan Koksal teamed up for the victory at No. 1 over Kirill Azovtsev, while Carl Johnson and Vyacheslav Glebov paired for the win at No. 2, versus Rodrigo Teixeira and Josep Molet.
Gartner, ranked No. 7 in the region, then took on Teixeira, the 47th ranked singles player in the nation, at No. 1 singles. Gartner dropped the first set 3-6, but bounced back to take the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-4, for the upset. Glebov also had a three-set victory at No. 2, against Azovtsev, ranked No. 8 in the region, taking the first set 7-6, before dropping the second, 3-6, but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the deciding set. Mercy got another exciting three-set triumph at No. 4, from Koksal, who first won 6-3 versus Vladmir Malkin, then fell 4-6, and came back with a 6-2 decision.
Mercy will close out the regular season with a key NYCAC match at Queens College on Tuesday, April 18, at 2:30 p.m. Queens is currently ranked No. 3 in the region.
