Mercy Men's Tennis Edges Adelphi 5-4, for Fifth Straight Win
VALHALLA, NY - The Mercy College men's tennis team, currently ranked No. 7 in the Fila Northeast regional rankings, defeated visiting Adelphi, the No. 9 ranked team in the region, in a key New York Collegiate Athletic Conference match by a score of 5-4, on Wednesday, March 29. Mercy remains undefeated at 5-0 on the year and 2-0 in NYCAC play, while Adelphi falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Mercy opened up by taking two of three matches in doubles play. The duo of Carl Johnson and Vyacheslav Glebov defeated Zack Lister and Brandin O'Connell at No. 2 by a score of 8-5, while Pavol Vasko and Timon Prosper teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Alex Molotsky and Pierre Streat. Adelphi's Nicolas Sanchez and Tomasz Walczak knocked off Hans Peter Gartner and Yusufcan Koksal, 8-6, at No. 1.
Gartner, the No. 8 ranked singles player in the Northeast, gave the Flyers a point at No. 1, taking Sanchez with a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Mercy also got straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 from Prosper and Vasko. Adelphi took the other three singles matches, including a pair of three-set decisions at No. 4 with Molotsky defeating Koksal, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and Lister topping Johnson 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3.
Mercy returns to action on Friday, March 31, with a key regional matchup at Kutztown, currently ranked No. 2 in the Northeast and No. 39 in the nation.
