Mercy Men's Tennis Blanks NJIT, 9-0

TENAFLY, NJ - The Mercy College men's tennis team, ranked No. 7 in the first spring FILA Northeast regional rankings, opened up the season with a 9-0 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sunday evening.

Senior Hans Peter Gartner cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Stephen Arlt, while freshman Vyacheslav Glebov also rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, defeating Ramy Lawandy. Sophomore Carl Johnson took his match against Mike Lawandy at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Yusufcan Koksal battled past Arjun Anamd 6-4 in the first set at No. 4 singles, before posting a 6-0 winner in the second set. Freshman Timon Prosper followed with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 singles and senior Dennis James completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

In doubles action, Gartner and Koksal paired up to breeze by Arlt and Ramy Lawandy by a score of 8-1 in the top slot.  The duos of Johnson/Glebov and Vasko/Prosper both won their matches 8-2 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

The Flyers return to action on Wednesday, March 22, when they host Dowling, the No. 5 team in the region.  That match will be held at Westchester Community College's Valhalla Campus.
