Men's Soccer Releases 2011 Schedule, Recruiting Class

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Mercy College men's soccer program has released its 2011 schedule and recruiting class. Coming off a very promising year, Head Coach Chris Smith and the Mavericks will faceoff this season in numerous East Coast Conference battles and spar with regionally-competitive opponents as well.

Mercy opens up the season at the St. Rose Tournament on September 2 and 3. The Mavericks will square off against St. Michael's and St. Rose. From there, Mercy opens its home season with a three-game homestand against familiar Division II foes: Holy Family, St. Anselm and Nyack.

After an away game at Felician College, Mercy will ignite ECC play with two-consecutive contests versus Bridgeport and Queens.

New opponents this season include the University of the District of Columbia (Sept. 28), Chestnut Hill (Oct. 5) and Stonehill (Oct. 12). Non-conference rematches from last year will feature tilts against Lock Haven (Oct. 18) and Philadelphia University (Oct. 26).

St. Thomas Aquinas (Oct. 1), NYIT (Oct. 8), C.W. Post (Oct. 15), Molloy (Oct. 23) and Dowling (Oct. 29, regular season finale) round out the rest of the ECC action.

The ECC semifinals will be held on November 2, while the ECC championship game will take place on November 4.

Ransmond Aboagye            Jr.            F/M             5-6/150            Bronx, N.Y.

 Attended Borough of Manhattan CC; Physical Therapy Major; Was named a Junior College D3 1st Team All Region selection in 2010 leading his team in scoring with 11 goals and six assists. 

Coaches Comments-Ransmond is a tough, determined and fast player who can get behind opposing defenses and create scoring chances.  He is very explosive and should help the Mavericks offense in 2011.

 

Ernest Afful             Jr.            F              5-11/175             Columbus, Ohio

Attended North Country CC; Business Administration Major; Was named a Junior College D3 1st Team All American selection in 2009, leading his team with 20 goals and 13 assists.  In an injury-shortened season in 2010, he scored seven goals in nine games. 

Coaches Comments-Ernest is a determined goal scorer with athleticism and pace.  He can set others up, take players on and is dangerous with both feet.  He is a very skilled player and will be a major attacking threat for the Mavericks in 2011.

 

Terrell Chapman            Fr.             M/F              5-9/155            Baldwin, N.Y.

Attended Baldwin HS; Education Major; Plays for the U17 Valley Stream Forest.

Coaches Comments-Terrell is athletically gifted and should have an immediate impact at the collegiate level.  He is a very fast and dangerous 1v1 player who is physically ready to compete for time as a freshman. 

 

Roberto Dashi             Fr.            F            6-2/200            Central Nyack, N.Y.

Attended Clarkstown South HS; Undecided Major; Plays for the Clarkstown Soccer Club

Coaches Comments-Roberto will have an instant impact as a target player who can hold the ball under pressure, has a great presence in the air and can score goals.  He has pace, toughness and a very competitive mentality.  If fit and healthy, the true freshman could be a Rookie of the Year candidate.   

 

Ryan Flynn              Fr.            M/D             5-8/140            Valley Stream, N.Y.

Attended Valley Stream South HS; Undecided MajorPlays for the U18 Garden City Gladiators of the NERP league and has been Captain for several years.  An Honor Roll student and High School team Captain at Valley Stream South, he received All Conference Honors in 2009 and 2010.

Coaches Comments-Ryan will compete for playing time at several positions as he is a very versatile player with strong fitness.  He is an extremely intelligent and hard working player that will find a way to help the team.

 

Daniel Leon          Fr.            M                   5-6/190            Flushing, N.Y.

Attended Cardozo HS; Undecided Major; Plays for the Albertson Academy 92's.  He was High School team captain; An ODP standout for Eastern NY for 4 years, Leon was selected one year for the Region 1 player pool.

Coaches Comments-Danny will help the Mavericks offense keep better possession in 2011 as he has great tactical awareness, technique and poise.  He can play holding or attacking center midfield and is very hard to push off the ball.

 

Juan Carlos Murgueitio        Fr.          M            5-7/145            Jackson Heights, N.Y.

Attended HS for Arts and Business; Undecided Major; Plays for U17 Albertson Academy Roma.  High School team captain and member of the National Honor Society.

Coaches Comments-Juan Carlos will have an immediate impact as a fit, technical young player that will help the Mavericks in 2011.  He is quick and dangerous going forward especially from the flanks.

 

Nick Papas                    Jr.            GK            6-1/200            Castleton , N.Y.

Attended Hudson Valley CC; Education Major; Plays both Soccer and Baseball at HVCC and will play both sports at Mercy.

Coaches Comments-Nick will have an immediate impact as an athletic, quick and strong player who comes off his line very well to help stop potential through balls.  He has quick reflexes, can make the big save and can distribute well.

 

Manuel Paulino             Jr.            D            5-10/170            Bronx, N.Y.

Attended Borough of Manhattan CC; Education Major; Was named a Junior College 1st Team All CUNY selection in 2010; the team captain led his team to the 2nd best defensive year in program history.

Coaches Comments-Manuel is a tremendous ball winner, fierce competitor and a strong leader.  Athletic, fast and good in the air especially on restarts, he will be an impact defensive player on the Mavericks back line in 2011.

 

William Sandoval        Fr.            M          5-4/140           Port Washington, N.Y.

Attended Schreiber HS; Accounting Major; Plays for the Albertson Academy 92's.  He was High School team captain; he was an ODP standout for Eastern NY for 2 years.

Coaches Comments-William has good vision, technique and quickness.  He is a young player that will get better everyday and can play at the wide midfield spot where he can create off the dribble and provide good services.

 

Mubarak Sani           Jr.            M             5-11/165            Bronx, N.Y.

Attended Borough of Manhattan CC; Pharmacy Major; Was named a Junior College D3 1st Team All Region selection in 2010 and was an All American Nominee. 

Coaches Comments-Mubarak possesses tremendous technique, tactical awareness and vision that will greatly improve the Mavericks attack in 2011.  He is determined to get better and can be equally dangerous scoring or setting up others.  If fit and healthy, he can be an All Conference player in the ECC.

 

Modou Seck          Sr.             D/M           6-2/170            Bronx, N.Y.

Attended Borough of Manhattan CC and Dowling; Business Major; Was named a Junior College D3 2nd Team All Region selection in 2009 and played in 11 games and started 6 in 2010, scoring his lone goal against Mercy.

Coaches Comments-Modou, nicknamed "Lamine", will play his last year of eligibility at Mercy where he should be an immediate impact player at center back or defensive midfield.  He possesses strong leadership qualities, is an excellent student, very dominant on restarts and reads the game well.

 

Rechmial Wallace        So.              D         5-9/180            Brooklyn, N.Y.

Attended Technical Career Institutes; Computer Science Major; a Junior College transfer after one year at TCI, will have four years of eligibility.

Coaches Comments-Rechmial is very calm on the ball, makes good decisions, is good in the air and has excellent technical ability.  He is athletic, quick and has great potential to help improve the Maverick defense in the future.
