Mercy Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener at Nyack, 2-0
The Mercy College men’s soccer team fought hard but fell at Nyack College on Thursday, 2-0, in the season opener for both squads. With temperatures approaching the century mark, Mercy had opportunities throughout the game, but could not capitalize.
Nyack scored its goals in the 45th and
83rd minutes.
The Warriors (1-0) began the game on the attack, as Mercy dropped back to find comfort. Almost 12 minutes in, the Mavericks found their stride, and dominated play for the rest of the first half. Perhaps the best opportunity for Mercy in the first half came in the 23rd minute, when junior Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./HVCC) sent a corner kick into the box, where the ball rattled around before being cleared off the line. Later, in the final minute of play before the break, Nyack’s Gavin Penny took a shot which was stopped by Mercy keeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry College). But Velazquez could not corral the shot, and allowed a rebound, which returned right to Penny, who found the far corner for a 1-0 lead.
After the break, again the Mavericks (0-1) were on the attack. Mercy had several good opportunities, but could not capitalize. Sophomore Alex Cruz (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had a few of those chances, but could not finish. Late in the second half, with the Mavericks pushing forward, the Warriors were able to counter attack and seal the game with their second and final goal.
Mercy College returns to action this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5, at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
