FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Mercy College men’s soccer team came back with two goals in the final 20 minutes, cutting the Queens College Knight’s lead to one-goal, 3-2, but fell just short of a win on Thursday in Flushing. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., but was changed to Thursday due to weather and field conditions.

With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the East Coast Conference. The Knights advance to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

The Queens College Knights scored first with a goal in the 14th minute of play. Despite 17 shots in the first half, sophomore Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) made six key saves to hold the Knights to just a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Walsh ended the game with 12 saves, a season-best total for the sophomore. Walsh faced 34 Queens shots and 11 Queens College corner kicks.

Coming back from the break, the Knights scored two-straight in the 48th and 62nd minute to take a 3-0 lead over the Mavericks.

Not to be defeated, Mercy College junior Artiz Artoni (Sao Paolo, Brazil) connected with from the left wing Daniel Iamicelli (Ossining, N.Y.) who scored on Knight goalkeeper Ivan Salame to break the shut out in the 76th minute.

With three minutes left to play, the Mavericks brought the game within one goal as Rory Rosten (Mahopac, N.Y.) headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from Gianfranco Bastone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Despite the late two-goal effort, Mercy College could not tie it up in the final three minutes.

The Mavericks had 15 shots to the Knights’ 34 and five corner kicks to 11 for Queens College.

The Mavericks have one more regular season game left to play in the 2009 season. Mercy College will travel to Felician on Saturday, Oct. 31 for their final game of the 2009 season.
