Nick Bell Named Head Men's Soccer Coach at Mercy College

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College Co-Interim Director of Athletics Bill Sullivan announced that Nick Bell (Tarrytown, NY) has been named head men's soccer coach.  Bell has been serving as interim head coach since August 10.

"Nick did an outstanding job this fall and is a highly regarded soccer coach," said Sullivan. "He has been a big part of the program and the Mercy College community for over 10 years.  We know he will continue to make an impact on the lives of our men's soccer student-athletes, and we look forward to him guiding the program in pursuit of conference, regional, and national success."

Bell took the reigns for Christian Gonzalez, guiding the team to a 7-7-3 overall record in his first season, and a 4-4-1 record in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, earning the number four seed in the conference tournament. The Mavericks were ranked as high as No. 5 in the Northeast Region, before finishing the year at No. 9.

Bell served as an assistant coach at Mercy for three seasons, one under his former coach Will Cintron in 2002, and the last two under Gonzalez.  He also played for four seasons at Mercy appearing at nearly every position on the field, including a full season as goalkeeper.  That year he set the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes. In his first season, Bell helped the squad to an ECAC Championship.

Bell is a 2005 graduate of Mercy College with a bachelor's degree in business administration.  He has also been a head coach on the scholastic level, guiding nearby Archbishop Stepinac High School from 1998-2002.  He holds a Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Coaching Certificate, and has received the Irish Soccer Association Coaching Award.

Bell will return 15 letterwinners from this year's squad in 2008, including seven starters.
