Mercy's Nizar Chahbani and Norton Carnegie Earn Spots on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men's Soccer Teams

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -  Mercy College standouts Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) and Norton Carnegie (Kingston, Jamaica) have earned spots on the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men's Soccer Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Chahbani, a senior accounting major with a 3.9 grade point average, was named to the District 1 College Division First Team and will now move on to the national ballot in consideration for Academic All-America Honors.  He ranked second on this year's squad with 18 points on seven goals and four assists, netting three game-winners and assisting on another.  Chahbani was named East Coast Conference (ECC) Offensive Player of the Week on October 8.

Carnegie was a District 1 College Division Third Team selection with a 3.26 grade point average while pursuing his degree in computer information systems.  The senior played a big role in helping Mercy post four shutouts this season and also contributed on offense, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 4-0 win over Goldey Beacom.

Chahbani and Carnegie helped the Mavericks to a 7-7-3 overall mark and the number four seed in the ECC Tournament with a 4-4-1 mark in league play.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
