Mavericks Defeated by No. 6 Dowling in ECC Men's Soccer Semifinals

OAKDALE, NY - Fourth-seeded Mercy College fell by a score of 3-0 to top-seeded Dowling in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday. The Mavericks finish the year at 7-7-3 overall, while the Golden Lions, ranked No. 6 in the nation, improved to 14-2-3.

Dowling jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring just seven minutes into the contest.  Thomas Vaaland (Stavanger, Norway) sent in a long throw-in to Junior Laurencin (St. Lucia) who connected on a one-timer.  That would be the lone goal in the first half despite a combined 15 shots between the two teams.

Dowling held the one-goal lead for most of the second frame until Laurencin scored in the 77th minute, picking up a rebound of Marcus Come's (Gothenburg, Sweden) initial shot that was stopped and chipping it into the right corner.

The Golden Lions picked up another insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Come converted a penalty kick, finding the left side.

Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made seven saves on the day. Dowling's Nemanja Veljovic (Belgrade, Serbia) made two stops.

Dowling will host second-seeded Bridgeport in the Finals of the ECC Tournament on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 PM.
