Mercy College Men's Soccer Earns Fourth Seed in ECC Tournament
Mavericks to play top-seeded and seventh-ranked Dowling in semifinals on October 31.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College men's soccer team has earned the number four seed in this year's East Coast Conference (ECC) Championship Tournament. The Mavericks will travel to take on top seed Dowling, the No. 7 ranked team in the nation, on Wednesday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. in the semifinals.
In his first year at the helm, Nick Bell has guided Mercy to a 6-6-3 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in ECC play. The Mavericks are ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Northeast regional poll.
Junior Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) continues to lead Mercy with 20 points on eight goals and four assists, while senior forward Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) is right behind him with 18 points on seven goals, including three game-winners, and four assists.
Several newcomers have also contributed to the Mavericks' success, with three freshmen recording five points or more. Forward Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) has registered nine points on four goals and one assist. Midfielder Gianfranco Bastone (Yorktown Heights, NY) has added six points on one goal and four assists, and forward Mike Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, NY) leads the squad with five assists.
Mercy will play one more non-conference tune-up on Monday, when they travel to The University of the District of Columbia at 3:00 p.m. If the Mavericks defeat Dowling on Wednesday, they will take on the winner of the Bridgeport/NYIT semifinal on Saturday, November 3, in the ECC Championship game.
