Mercy College Men's Soccer Caps Regular Season with 2-0 Shutout of U.D.C.
GERMANTOWN, MD - The Mercy College men's soccer team wrapped up the 2007 regular season with a 2-0 shutout of The University of the District of Columbia in non-conference play on Monday. The Mavericks improved to 7-6-3 overall as they head into this week's East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament, while the Firebirds fell to 3-9-1.
The contest remained scoreless until the 78-minute mark when freshman midfielder Merquis Guzman (Bronx, NY) scored his first collegiate goal on a header off a cross from freshman forward Mike Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, NY). Senior forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) then gave Mercy some insurance with his team-leading ninth goal of season three minutes later.
The Mavericks out-shot UDC 16-10. Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) earned his fourth shutout of the season with five saves on the day. Togba Liberty made four stops in net for the Firebirds.
The Mavericks will be the number four seed in the ECC Tournament and will travel to take on top seed Dowling in the semifinals on Wednesday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Lions, No. 7 in the latest national rankings and defending national champions, enter the contest at 13-2-3 overall and captured the regular season crown with a 6-0-3 ECC mark. Second seeded Bridgeport and third-seeded NYIT will play in the other semifinal game with the winners meeting in the championship on Saturday, November 3, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
