Mercy College Men's Soccer Falls at No. 7 Dowling 4-0
OAKDALE, NY - The Mercy College men's soccer team was defeated 4-0 by host Dowling, ranked No. 7 in the nation, in their final East Coast Conference (ECC) game of the regular season on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 6-5-3 overall and 4-4-1 in ECC play. The Golden Lions improved to 13-2-3 overall and 6-0-3 in the league.
Dowling scored three times in the first half, the first two coming from Ahmadoul Gaye on assists by Junior Laurencin. Gaye's first goal came in the 17th minute on a shot in the box, and the second came in the 28th minute on a header off of a cross. Thomas Vaaland gave Dowling a 3-0 lead in the 34th minute on a give and go on the left side with Samba Traore.
The Golden Lions added one more tally in the 70th minute with Laurencin notching his third assist of the contest, feeding Jamie Hawryluk with a cross in the box that he one-timed.
Dowling held a 29-14 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even at 8-8. Mercy sophomore goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) stopped 10 shots. Nemanja Veljovic made five saves in 77:55 of action for Dowling, with Matthew Thavenius adding one save in 12:05.
The Mavericks will close out the regular season on Thursday, October 25, when they play host to Palm Beach Atlantic at Noon.
