C.W. Post Tops Mercy College Men's Soccer 3-2 in OT
BROOKVILLE, NY - Freshman Joe O'Rourke (London, England) scored 2:28 into the first overtime period to lift C.W. Post over visiting Mercy College in a East Coast Conference (ECC) men's soccer clash on Saturday. The Mavericks fell to 6-4-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the ECC. The Pioneers improved to 5-9-2 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Mercy built a 2-0 lead in the first half. The Mavericks scored their first goal just 35 seconds into the contest on an 18 yard blast by freshman Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) that found the right corner. Freshman Gianfranco Bastone (Yorktown Heights, NY) then recorded his first goal as a Maverick on a feed from senior defender Norton Carnegie (Kingston, Jamaica) in the 25th minute.
Mercy held the two-goal advantage until the 64th minute when junior Julian Escobar (Hicksville, NY) connected on a redirect by senior Dan Carlos (Westbury, NY), trimming the margin to 2-1. Escobar later tied the game for C.W. Post at 2-2 with a shot that caromed in off the right post in the 83rd minute.
O'Rourke gave the Pioneers the game-winner at 92:28 with a header into the right corner from six yards out on a pass by freshman Eric Vasquez (Flushing, NY).
Mercy out-shot C.W. Post 13-9. Sophomore goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made two saves for the Mavericks. Sophomore Joel Sanger (Mullica Hill, NJ) played the first half in net for the Pioneers, making one save, while freshman Ayrton Haddad (Scarsdale, NY) stopped three saves over the final 52:28.
Mercy will look to rebound on Wednesday, October 24, when they travel to Dowling, currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in the Northeast Region.
