Carl Spence and Earl Pommills Take Home ECC Weekly Honors for Mercy
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Mercy College men's soccer players Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and freshman Earl Pommills (Bridgeport, CT) received East Coast Conference (ECC) weekly honors on Monday. Spence was named Baden Co-Defensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Nick Bell of Molloy, and Pommills was selected as the Baden Rookie of the Week.
A 6-foot sophomore goalkeeper, Spence allowed just one goal in 200 minutes (0.45 GAA) last week and made 17 saves in Mercy's two outings (.944 sv pct). Against Queens, he made a career-high 12 saves to post his third shutout (4-0) of the season. Spence followed up with five saves, including two in the overtime periods to preserve a 1-1 tie with Bridgeport. On the year, he carries a 1.11 GAA and a .824 save percentage.
Pommills, a 6-foot-5 freshman defender, scored his first collegiate goal in the 50th minute on a header off a corner kick to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the shutout of Queens on Wednesday. He also played a key role in the backfield to help blank the Knights and post a 1-1 tie of Bridgeport.
The Mavericks are unbeaten in their last four (3-0-1) to improve to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in ECC play, good for second place. They will play at NYIT on Wednesday and at C.W. Post on Saturday.
