Mercy College Men's Soccer Battles Bridgeport to 1-1 Draw

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College men's soccer team played visiting Bridgeport to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Saturday. The Mavericks moved to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in ECC play, while the Purple Knights' record now stands at 7-3-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the league.

The contest remained scoreless until the 43:14 mark when Gilbert Bayonne (Amityville, NY) converted a corner kick by Njie Blaise (Banjul, Gambia) to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.

The advantage lasted only one minute and four seconds as freshman forward Mike Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, NY) picked up a loose ball and found sophomore Roger Rennis (Kingston, Jamaica) in front to knot the game at 1-1 just before the break.

Both teams had opportunities in the second frame, but Bridgeport goalkeeper Ryan Brooks-Newton (Slekirk, NY) made three saves and Mercy keeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) stopped one shot to send the game into overtime.

Bridgeport out-shot the Mavericks 8-3 in the extra periods, but again the defenses held up with Spence making two more saves, and Brooks-Newton one more to go along with a team save.

The Purple Knights out-shot Mercy 20-16 for the contest. Brooks-Newton finished with seven saves, while Spence stopped five in the game.

Mercy is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1) and will play again on Wednesday, October 17, at NYIT, currently ranked No. 24 in the nation.  Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
