Mercy College Men's Soccer Blanks Queens College 4-0

FLUSHING, NY -  Senior midfielder Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) scored two goals and assisted on another as the Mercy College men's soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout of host Queens College in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Wednesday. The win is the Mavericks' third straight and fifth in the last six games as they improved to 6-2-2 overall and 4-1 in ECC play.

After a scoreless first half, Mercy exploded for all four goals in the second frame.  The first came on a header by freshman Earl Pommills (Bridgeport, CT) off a corner kick from Chahbani in the 50th minute.  Just over two minutes later, Chahbani connected on a shot after a long goal kick from Mercy sophomore keeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

Chahbani added his second tally of the contest in the 68th minute, taking advantage of a goalkeeper misplay. The Mavericks would add one more insurance goal in the 84th minute when freshman Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) fired a shot from the top of the box off a feed from senior Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana).

Queens (4-7, 2-3 ECC) held a 26-21 edge in shots, but Spence was up to the task for Mercy making a career-high 12 saves to earn his third shutout of the year.  Queens goalkeeper Damian Skiba stopped four shots.

The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, October 13, when they host Bridgeport at Noon.
