Mavericks Down Concordia in ECC Men's Soccer Clash, 4-3
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior midfielder Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) netted two goals, including what would be the game-winner, and added an assist to lead the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over visiting Concordia College on Saturday.
Concordia (4-9, 1-4 ECC) got the scoring going just 6:05 into the contest on a goal by freshman forward Guilherme Ferreira (Sinop, Brazil). Just over a minute later, the Mavericks responded when Chahbani scored his first goal, connecting on a cross from freshman forward Mike Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, NY) to even the game at 1-1.
Mercy (5-2-2, 3-1 ECC) took a 2-1 lead in the 14th minute when senior forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) connected on a direct kick, but Concordia responded in the 19th minute with a tally from junior midfielder Stefan Dimitrov (Bulgaria), also on a direct kick.
The Mavericks regained the lead at 3-2 in the 24th minute as Chahbani delivered a corner kick to the far post where junior back Isiakka Sow (Bronx, NY) waited to knock it in. Chahbani gave Mercy a two-goal cushion with his second goal of the day off a cross from freshman forward Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) in the 51st minute.
That goal would prove to be important as Concordia's sophomore defender Valou Desrosiers (Jacmel, Haiti) cut the deficit to one when he knocked in a loose ball in the final minute, but Mercy put it away from there.
Mercy out-shot Concordia 16-12 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made two saves for the Mavericks, while senior Ivan Rodriguez (Galicia, Spain) stopped four shots for the Clippers.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, October 10, at Queens College.
