Mercy College Men's Soccer Blanks St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior midfielder Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) scored one goal and assisted on another as the Mercy College men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout of visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday. The Mavericks improved to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Spartans fell to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.
Chahbani put Mercy in front 1-0 in the 11th minute as he took a feed from freshman midfielder Gianfranco Bastone (Yorktown Heights, NY) on the left side, cut to the middle, and fired a shot into the lower right corner.
The Mavericks held the one-goal lead until the 71st minute when freshman forward Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) connected on a header off a well-placed corner kick by freshman forward Mike Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, NY).
Senior forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) added an insurance goal in the 87th minute as he was waiting on the far post for a ball from the left side by Chahbani.
St. Thomas Aquinas held a 16-11 advantage in shots, but Mercy's sophomore goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) stopped all four that were on goal to notch his second shutout of the season. Sophomore keeper Samer Abdel-Fattah (Floral Park, NY) made two saves for the Spartans.
The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, October 6, when they play host to ECC opponent Concordia beginning at 11:00 a.m.
