Mercy College Men's Soccer Falls to Molloy, 3-1
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Molloy College scored a pair of second half goals to go away with a 3-1 decision over host Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) men's soccer action on Saturday. The Mavericks' record fell to 3-2-2 overall and 1-1 in ECC play, while the Lions improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Molloy got on the scoreboard first as junior midfielder William Bell (Valley Stream, NY) was taken down just inside the penalty area in the 19th minute. Bell stepped up and converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks answered with their own penalty kick when Molloy was called for taking down a player just inside the top of the box in the 27th minute. Senior forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) took the shot and buried it to even the score at 1-1.
The Lions went ahead just 8:27 into the second half as freshman midfielder Mike Marques (Mineola, NY) took a touch from junior midfielder Michael Topel (Levittown, NY) after a Mercy foul and fired what would be the game-winner. Topel added an insurance goal at the 62-minute mark on a direct kick just outside the top of the penalty area.
Molloy held a 12-11 edge in shots. Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made four saves, while Molloy keeper Russ Francome (Hendon, England) stopped six.
The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, October 2, with another ECC matchup versus St. Thomas Aquinas at home, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
