Mavericks Start ECC Men's Soccer Play with a 2-1 Win at New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT -  Senior midfielder Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia) scored midway through the second half, and sophomore goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made 10 saves to lift the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at the University of New Haven on Wednesday.  It was the Mavericks' East Coast Conference (ECC) opener as they improved to 3-1-2 overall, while the Chargers fell to 2-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

The Chargers struck first, building a 1-0 lead on John Nolan's goal off a cross from Jessey Fernandez in the 18th minute.

Freshman forward Raldino Powell (Bronx, NY) then scored his first collegiate goal in the 25th minute of his first career game for Mercy, burying a hard shot from the left side to knot the score at 1-1.

The contest remained deadlocked until the 67th minute when Chahbani broke free on the left side and found the back of the net for what would be the game-winner.

New Haven held a 34-29 advantage in shots, with Spence making six stops in the second half to preserve the victory. James Milaire recorded 14 saves for the Chargers.

The Mavericks will host Molloy in another ECC contest on Saturday, September 29, beginning at Noon.
