Mercy College Men's Soccer Tops Felician 3-1
RUTHERFORD, NJ - Senior forward Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Mercy College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Felician on Monday. The Mavericks improved to 2-1-2 on the year, while the Golden Falcons fell to 0-6-2.
Mercy struck for its first tally in the 18th minute. Felician goalkeeper Paulo DosSantos (Toronto, Ontario) made a diving stop, but sophomore forward Roger Rennis (Kingston, Jamaica) quickly collected the rebound and finished the play.
The contest remained at 1-0 until the 81st minute when Frimpong-Manso converted a cross from freshman forward Mike Fernandes (Mount Vernon, NY), giving Mercy a 2-0 advantage.
Frimpong-Manso and Fernandes hooked up again with one minute and 34 seconds remaining in regulation, this time on a feed seven yards in front of the Felician net.
Felician avoided the shutout on a penalty kick 15 seconds later. The Mavericks were whistled for a handball in their penalty area and Armin Tandir (Bosnia) successfully converted for the Golden Falcons.
Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made eight saves in the contest, including a pair of diving stops in the final six minutes. DosSantos collected three saves for Felician.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 26, at New Haven in their East Coast Conference (ECC) opener, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
