Mercy College Men's Soccer, Bell, Make Debut with 1-1 Tie versus Caldwell

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's soccer team opened the 2007 season by playing to a 1-1 tie at home versus Caldwell College on Thursday, September 6.  It was Interim Head Coach Nick Bell's debut at the helm.  The visiting Cougars are now 0-1-2 on the year.

Neither team managed to put much together on the attack in the opening half. Caldwell held a 7-3 advantage in shots at the break, but the contest remained scoreless.

Mercy broke through first on a goal by senior Michael Frimpong-Manso (Accra, Ghana), with the assist going to senior Nizar Chahbani (Menzel Bourguiba, Tunisia)in the 74th minute.

The lead lasted until the 81st minute when Caldwell evened the game at 1-1 as Olaf Engh (Karlstad, Sweden) collected a loose ball in front and found the back of the net.   The Cougars appeared to have the go ahead goal scored in the 85th minute, but it was waved off on a hand ball call.

Caldwell had one shot in the two overtimes and the Mavericks had a pair, including a solid opportunity by Frimpong-Manso with only seconds left, but it went just wide before the final whistle.

Sophomore Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica) made three saves for Mercy, while John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ) stopped two for Caldwell.

The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday, September 9, at Bloomsburg. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
