Mercy College Athletics Names Nick Bell Interim Head Men's Soccer Coach

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Mercy College Director of Athletics Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss announced that Nick Bell has been named Interim Head Men's Soccer Coach.  Bell steps in for Christian Gonzalez who resigned after four seasons at the helm.

"Nick is the perfect choice to step in at this time and lead our men's soccer program" said McGinniss. "He has a long standing relationship with Mercy College and the team. He knows the student-athletes well and they respect him. The appointment of Nick Bell will provide for a seamless transition as we continue to move the program forward."

Bell served as an assistant men's soccer coach at Mercy for three seasons, one under his former coach Will Cintron in 2002, and the last two under Gonzalez.  Over those last two years, Mercy has posted a combined 14-11-5 overall record, a 7-6-3 mark in conference play, and made one conference tournament appearance (2005).

Bell played for four seasons at Mercy College appearing at nearly every position on the field, including a full season as goalkeeper.  That year he set the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes. In his first season, Bell helped the squad to an ECAC Championship.

Bell is a 2005 graduate of Mercy College with a bachelor's degree in business administration.  He has also been a head coach on the scholastic level, guiding nearby Archbishop Stepinac High School from 1998-2002.  Bell holds a Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Coaching Certificate, and has received the Irish Soccer Association Coaching Award.

Mercy finished the 2006 season at 6-5-3 overall and 3-2-3 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.  The Mavericks will return 14 players from last year's squad, including seven starters.
